With the rise of competitive gaming, streaming, video capture and social media, showing off your gaming prowess is easier than ever. The online world of gaming has grown exponentially and in doing so people tend to put their gaming ability on the rank or points they have achieved. Gone are the days of playing for fun and learning from your defeats, so to counter rage quitters, games have to implement punishments for those that strategically exit out of a match when they are going to loose.
As a gamer with a particular love of fighting games, it can be frustrating to be on the verge of a decicive win online only to see the dreaded disconect screen. Many players have had the same issue within the recent release of Street Fighter V and have called for strict punishments for those few guilty of rage quitting by collecting the gamer tags and sending videos of rage quitting to Capcom. As a result of this we have seen rage quitters getting a chunk of points removed.
Example of a SFV rage quit punish below
Other games that have tackled rage quitters have been Mortal Kombat X with the excelent introduction of Quitalities where the character of the rage quiter has their head blow up.
Pokken Tournament has had a backlash too, with players calling for harder punishments. Currently they have a number of in game currency taken but it doesn’t effect there rank in any way.
Its not just fighting games tho. Overwatch has had to implicate a punishment system for those that rage quit, they will first receive a warning message then
if that player continues to leave games after receiving this warning, they will incur a 75% XP penalty for future games.
Do you think there should be greater punishments for rage quitting? or, do you think that it’s all a bunch of nonsense?
I would hope that the rise of ‘E-Sports’ would bring more people into gaming and hope that these punishments will deter people from ruining some online experiences so we can just get back to doing the thing we love to do. Play the chuffing game!
Had any rage quitter incidents? Have an idea for combating this ‘issue’? Let us know in the comments and we can get back to just playing the game, not letting the fictional points/rank dictate the game.
